A New Way to Explore Amsterdam’s Fire Department History

In 2025, Amsterdam marks 750 years, and the Amsterdam Fire Department celebrates 150 years of service. To honor this milestone, we created an immersive city tour app that brings the fire department’s history to life at key locations across the city.

Bringing the Fire Department’s Legacy to Life with AR

As users explore the city, they follow an interactive map guiding them through historic fire department landmarks. At each stop, they unlock fire-related stories, view historical photos, hear expert insights, and experience AR-enhanced reconstructions—bringing the evolution of the fire department to life in the very places where history happened.

Innovation on Large Scale

We leveraged Niantic’s VPS technology—typically used for small objects—to precisely map AR experiences onto large-scale structures. This enabled historically significant fire-related events to be visualized at their exact locations, allowing users to experience past incidents as if they were unfolding in real time.

Impact

Launched in late 2024, just in time for Amsterdam’s anniversary, this app redefines city tours. It’s not just another tourist guide—it’s an immersive experience that highlights the evolution of the Amsterdam Fire Department, turning the city into a dynamic, interactive museum of its firefighting past.
