Avatars for VR Research

MAXLab Freiburg runs VR-based criminology experiments which needs realistic, customisable avatars for their VR environments. These avatars had to be generated on the spot and enable different alterations such as aging.

Each VR experiment is running its own avatar creation system, making it challenging to maintain and improve. Recognizing the need for a more streamlined approach, we proposed a unified, future-proof solution to enhance their workflow.

Introducing the Avatar Creation Tool

We created the Avatar Creation Tool (ACT), an iOS app for iPad and iPhone. The ACT generates realistic avatars from a single photo in seconds. Before the VR experiment begins, experimenters take a headshot of study participants using the iPad. The VR-ready, 3D avatar is then generated on the spot andcan be edited and synced to any VR experiment using a six-digit code.

The ACT delivers highly realistic avatars, which are essential for creating immersive VR experiments that engage participants. Additionally, its rapid avatar creation process enables MAXLab to run multiple experiments within the same timeframe.

Improving Research with ACT

Thanks to the new ACT, MAXLab now has a single avatar creation process that simplifies future improvements and benefits research projects. It has already been used for multiple VR experiments at MAXLab and other institutions.
