Effective Exposure Therapy in VR

Dr. Tara Donker and her team at VU Amsterdam developed ZeroPhobia to test if VR exposure therapy could treat acrophobia as effectively as real-life methods.

A successful randomized controlled trial (RCT) proved its effectiveness.Recognizing the potential to assist individuals struggling with this condition, the research team decided to release the app and asked Orb Amsterdam to prepare it for public use.

Making it Ready for Public

We transformed ZeroPhobia from a research-focused tool into a public-ready application. Through the app, users are gradually exposed to heights in VR by completing different goals set under the guidance of a virtual therapist. By integrating exposure therapy into an engaging game format, the app ensures users can access therapy easily from their smartphones, applying it wherever they are.

We enhanced the app with multilingual support to reach a global audience and ensured compatibility across various devices. By addressing technical challenges and optimising functionality, we made the app accessible to users worldwide. The global launch brought scientifically validated therapy to thousands, offering a transformative solution to overcoming the fear of heights.
