A Citywide Celebration of Film

The 50th International Film Festival Rotterdam faced COVID-19 restrictions that halted in-person viewings. To ensure the festival’s spirit continued, Studio VollaersZwart developed an innovative concept of transforming the city into an open-air cinema, featuring large green structures placed in different locations throughout Rotterdam as canvases. They approached Artishock and Orb to bring this vision to life using immersive technology.

Creating a Cinematic WebAR Adventure

We created an immersive WebAR experience that transformed those structures into pop-up cinemas. Each structure played a one-minute tiger-themed clip from IFFR’s archive, allowing people to enjoy film moments directly through their smartphones without needing to download an app. This simple, accessible setup reconnected the city with the festival’s energy, encouraging people to travel through Rotterdam to experience each unique structure. By combining WebAR technology, custom AR markers, and the 8th Wall framework, we ensured smooth video playback under any weather or lighting conditions, while seamlessly integrating IFFR’s systems for reliable streaming.

The Return of Festival Vibes

"Tiger on the Loose" brought much-needed togetherness to Rotterdam during a time of isolation. It recreated the sense of community and joy normally felt during the in-person festival. The project was recognized as a finalist at the 2021 Auggie Awards for Best Art or Film.
